When there was about one week of school left, I found my daughter in her room sobbing.  I asked her what was wrong and she told me she was really sad that school was almost over for the year.  She was going to miss her friends and her teachers, but mostly she was going to miss reading and writing.

My daughter just finished her kindergarten year.

I assured her that this summer was going to be fun.  There was going to be lots of exciting things to occupy her time.  She’d be going to the pool; taking swim lessons; playing with her friends; running around outside; etc.  She looked at me with a forced smile and asked me, “But what about reading and writing?”

This is the same daughter who begs me to take her to the library every week.

My husband and I feel very fortunate that we have a child who is so passionate about learning.  She can’t decide if she wants to be a doctor or a librarian because she doesn’t know which one reads more.

This is our child!

When I was young, I did all and everything to avoid reading and writing.  Where did she come from?

What happens next?

What happens next?

In order to keep her happy we ordered a bunch of books to keep her occupied.  They didn’t last very long.  She read all of them in a day and moved on to her sister’s books.

Discovering Flint Books has been such a great thing for her!  It has forced her to use that incredible brain of hers to come up with her own stories.  And it’s taking more time because she wants it to be perfect.  I don’t know where she gets it from. (sigh)

Writing her own book ... and couldn't stop!

Writing her own book … and couldn’t stop!

Kevin Meier of Flint Books has illustrated a series of books.  These books are full of beautiful drawings that force your imagination to run wild because there are no words.  Meier left blank pages in the book for the reader to insert their own story.  The reader is forced to use their imagination to come up with the words they see best fits the images.

When we first received the original book in the series, we decided we would write a  story together as a family.  Our daughter quickly took over the book.  It was fine with all of us because it was really cool to see her working so hard determined to finish the story.

The beginning of the story is a bit discombobulated because there were four writers, but it has turned into a masterpiece.  I won’t share her version because you shouldn’t let the influence take over your own thoughts.  Make it your own and watch how proud you or your child becomes when it is complete.

What we love about Flint Books:

1)   Meier is very talented.  The illustrations are beautifully composed.

2)   The idea behind his books is very fresh and clever.  There’s nothing out there like these.

3)   Flint Books bring back the importance of the good old-fashioned paper book.  It reminds you how much you love holding the real thing in your hands.  Book stores should be all over these books.  They will bring customers back into their stores!

4)   Our kids use their imaginations and create entertaining stories with these books.

5)   We want more!  We can’t wait to get our hands on the next book.

It’s been wonderful to see how excited our daughter is about these books.  She would rather re-write her stories than watch TV in the afternoon heat.  She doesn’t pout anymore if we’re staying home during the day.  These books have even motivated her to create her own books.  She’ll draw pictures and then write the stories to accompany them.  Her sister thinks it neat too!

I would like to extend my gratitude to Flint Books for sponsoring this post.
